(III) MINUTES OF THE HAPA EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE 10/15/07
On Monday, October 15, 2007 George Petrides, MD opened the HAPA teleconference of the HAPA Executive Committee meeting at 5:00PM EST
Participants included Dr. George Petrides, President; Dr. Maria Lymberis, HAPA Founder and Past President; and Dr. Manolis Cassimatis, President-Elect.
Drs Vassilis Latoussakis, HAPA Treasurer and George Papakostas,, HAPA Secretary were unable to attend.
Dr. Petrides reported on his recent trip to Greece where he represented HAPA at the meeting of the Eastern European Psychiatric Association (EEPA). This very successful conference was held in Thessaloniki, under the auspices of the World Psychiatric Association. It was organized by our distinguished colleague, HAPA member and Past HAPA officer, Dr. George Christodoulou, President of the EEPA and immediate Past President of the Hellenic Psychiatric Association.
Dr. Petridis had an opportunity while in Greece, to speak with several Greek colleagues, including Dr. George Papadimitriou, recently elected Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Athens. Dr Papadimitriou expressed a strong interest in having HAPA participate in the 2008 Hellenic Psychiatric Association’s meeting which will be held in Crete on May 14th 2008, right after the APA Annual meeting, May 3rd thru May 8th 2008.
The HAPA officers discussed various options for HAPA participation. It was agreed that HAPA sponsor two programs at the Crete meeting:
1) A panel discussion on post graduate psychiatric education: “Post graduate Psychiatric Training: Options for Training in the USA and Greece (or EU)”. Dr. Lymberis offered to chair the panel which should include both HAPA and HPA members.
2) A lecture presentation by Dr. Cassimatis, the incoming HAPA President, on a topic of his choice, with discussant (s) to be determined by HPA (preferably the discussant (s) should be psychiatrists from Greece).
The HAPA Officers discussed the May 2008 HAPA Annual Meeting: The program has been finalized for Tuesday May 6th 2008. We are very excited at the opportunity to have as our speaker UCLA Professor George Bartzokis, MD. He will speak on: “Brain aging and age-related risk factors for prevalent neurodegenerative disorders: Implications for treatment and prevention”.
Dr Pertides will report next time on his efforts to obtain an educational grant for our CME annual meeting from any of the various Foundations of the Pharmaceutical industry. Dr Lymberis will again apply to the APA and reserve a room for our HAPA 9th Annual meeting on May 6th 2008 at 7:00PM. This again will be a dinner meeting.
This meeting should have better attendance than our meeting last year. However, we need to work on getting the word out and get more members to our meeting.
Dr. Petrides also reported on an email he received from Dr. George Dangas, President of the Hellenic Medical Society of New York, concerning the June 2007 Declaration of Kos of the Global Hellenic Medical Network (GHMN) and information about their future meetings. Information about the GHMN’s activities including the Declaration of Kos can be found at their website:http://www.hmsny.org/eventsmedconf.html.
Members of the HAPA Executive committee were asked by Dr Dangas to consider endorsing the Kos Declaration. It was agreed that members of the HAPA Executive Committee will review the declaration of Kos (as noted on their website) and be prepared, at the next meeting, to vote as to whether HAPA should endorse it. Dr Petrides will ask Dr Dangas to submit ASAP any additional info he feels should be considered before the HAPA vote.
The last issue discussed was Nominations for HAPA officers for the May 2008 HAPA elections. The Chair of the Nominating Committee is Dr Cassimatis. He is currently receiving nominations. Members are encouraged to contact him and submit nominations at Emmanuel Cassimatis, MD ecassimatis@usuhs.edu.
The next HAPA Executive Committee meeting is planned for 11/26/07 at 5:00PM EST to be chaired by Dr Petrides
Respectfully Submitted
Emmanuel Cassimatis, MD
HAPA President Elect
